Portrait of actress Mary Anderson Macauley's Theater Collection

Macauley's Theater in Louisville, Kentucky, was built by Bernard "Barney" Macauley in 1873 and operated after 1879 by his brother John. The theater's lobby was decorated floor to ceiling with these rare photographs of actors and actresses.

Known as The Traipsin' Woman, Jean Thomas (1881-1982 ) traveled the mountains of eastern Kentucky transcribing songs, writing and taking snapshot photographs of people and folkways.

Richard Gilbert Potter (1901-1987) was a salesman and sometime photographer who collected photographs Louisville people, places and events. The collection also contains large-format black and white negatives made by the Walter Fischer Studio (active1927 -1945) purchased by Potter in 1945.
